A stubby, oddly proportioned raccoon has become an unlikely social media sensation after footage of the animal waddling through a Seattle yard spread rapidly online. Dubbed Jimothy by the neighbors who first noticed him, the raccoon has developed a devoted online following thanks to a body shape unlike anything most viewers had seen on the species before.
Jimothy's compact, rounded frame is most likely the result of a birth defect affecting his spine, according to specialists who have reviewed footage of the animal. Despite the unusual build, he otherwise appears to be in good health, moving with apparent ease through the streets and yards of the Ballard neighborhood where he has taken up residence.
The raccoon's newfound fame traces back to a single evening walk. Kiana Hall, 33, who works in marketing, was out with her husband on the evening of July 13 when she noticed something shifting beneath a parked car. Her first guess was that a neighborhood cat was hiding there, but a closer look revealed a far more unusual visitor.
Hall recorded the encounter and shared it, and the clip quickly found an audience well beyond Ballard. Viewers were drawn to the raccoon's unmistakable silhouette, so different from the lean, elongated build typical of the species, and many began referring to him affectionately by the nickname that has since stuck.
Congenital spinal abnormalities of the kind believed to affect Jimothy can alter an animal's posture, gait, and overall proportions without necessarily shortening its lifespan or limiting its ability to forage and move around. Because Jimothy is a wild animal rather than a patient under direct veterinary care, though, his condition has been assessed only from a distance, and experts caution that the "likely" diagnosis based on video observation stops short of a confirmed medical finding.
Neighbors in the area say Jimothy has continued to appear periodically since the video circulated, drawing curious residents and visitors hoping for a glimpse. Wildlife specialists generally advise against approaching or feeding raccoons, whatever their appearance, since even animals that look docile can carry disease or react defensively if cornered. Ballard residents have largely been content to observe from a distance and let the animal go about its routine undisturbed.
Jimothy's viral moment fits a broader pattern of internet audiences embracing animals whose appearance defies expectations, from unusually shaped pets to wildlife photographed in odd poses.
