Fine, electric mountain bikes don’t suck

Electric mountain bikes are having a reputation problem, and a recent piece from The Verge argues the backlash is largely undeserved. The core point is a modest one: a battery and motor bolted to a mountain bike will not automatically turn a rider into a more skilled cyclist, but it may be the reason someone gets on a trail in the first place and eventually wants to improve.
That framing runs counter to a persistent strain of criticism within cycling circles, where electric mountain bikes, often shortened to eMTBs, have been dismissed as a shortcut for people unwilling to put in the physical effort that traditional off-road riding demands. Critics have suggested that pedal-assist motors erase the achievement of climbing a technical trail, effectively letting riders "cheat" their way to viewpoints and descents that used to require serious fitness.
The counterargument centers on what the motor actually does and does not do. Assistance from an electric drivetrain can flatten a punishing climb, but it does nothing to help a rider read terrain, manage balance on loose rock, brake through a switchback, or control a bike at speed on a descent. Those remain skills that only come from time in the saddle, and an eMTB does not shortcut that learning curve any more than a lighter carbon frame or better suspension would.
Where electric mountain bikes do change the equation is access. By reducing the physical toll of climbing, they let riders who might otherwise be shut out by age, injury, limited fitness, or simply less free time cover more ground and spend more of their energy on the technical descents that make mountain biking appealing in the first place. For some riders, that lower barrier to entry is what keeps them coming back to the sport at all, rather than being priced out of it by exhaustion.
The broader argument extends this idea a step further: easier entry can build enthusiasm that eventually turns into the very dedication traditionalists say is missing. Someone who starts on an assisted bike because unassisted climbs feel out of reach may, over time, log enough hours on the trail to develop real handling skill, and possibly graduate to riding without assistance altogether. In that reading, the motor functions less as a cheat code and more as an on-ramp.
Not everyone in the mountain biking community is convinced. Land managers and trail advocacy groups in some regions have raised separate concerns about eMTBs, including trail erosion from higher speeds and added weight, as well as conflicts with hikers and traditional cyclists on shared multi-use paths. Several public land systems in the United States still classify electric mountain bikes as motorized vehicles, restricting where they can legally ride even as manufacturers push the category into the mainstream.
Those access disputes are likely to continue playing out trail by trail and jurisdiction by jurisdiction, separate from the cultural argument over whether motor assistance undermines the sport's ethos. But the underlying case made in the piece is that gatekeeping around fitness and effort misses what draws most people outdoors in the first place, and that a wider on-ramp for mountain biking is, on balance, a healthy thing for the sport's future.
