Green Sea Turtles Are Making a Remarkable Comeback on the Remote Aldabra Atoll and Around the World. But Their Recovery Is Far From Complete

Green sea turtles have gained a more hopeful place on the global conservation map, but the view from Aldabra Atoll shows why a single worldwide label cannot settle every question about a species’ future. A year after the turtles’ status shifted from endangered to least concern, the remote western Indian Ocean refuge offers a striking picture of recovery: females still return to its beaches to lay eggs. At the same time, the story is not one of a finished rescue. The change in classification records broad progress, while Aldabra’s nesting grounds underline the need to look closely at what recovery means in particular places.
Aldabra lies roughly 400 miles from Africa’s eastern shoreline, isolated enough to make its wildlife encounters seem almost improbable. It is among the rare locations where giant tortoises, animals of the land, may share an environment with their much more ocean-going relatives, green sea turtles. The contrast is central to the atoll’s character: one animal moves slowly across dry ground, while the other arrives from the sea and leaves evidence of its visit on a narrow strip of sand.

Green turtles use Aldabra as a nesting site throughout the calendar year, rather than confining their breeding visits to one brief annual window. Even so, the number seen at the beaches changes with the season. During the period described, fewer turtles were present than at busier times. That fluctuation matters because a quiet beach does not necessarily signal an empty one; it can reflect the rhythms of an animal whose presence is spread across the year.
Night searching on the atoll begins with the beach itself. Moonlight gives the sand a pale cast, while red-filtered flashlight beams provide the only man-made illumination. Those lights are used to scan the shore for signs of turtles without turning the beach into a brightly lit scene. Most nesting females work along Aldabra’s outer edge, where the coast faces the open water and their movements can be read in the marks left between the surf and higher ground.
The clearest clues are the routes the turtles carve with their flippers. A female moving up the beach leaves a broad pattern of alternating impressions, one side then the other, rather than a smooth dragged line. The result can resemble the heavy tread of an oversized vehicle, a conspicuous trail across otherwise unbroken sand. Such tracks point observers away from the water and toward the places where a turtle may have stopped to prepare a nest.

One trail in the account led beyond the waterline and into casuarina trees above the reach of the highest tide. There, the drier sand offers conditions suitable for nesting. The ground has been repeatedly excavated by turtles, with nest hollows scattered so densely that the beach can appear dramatically pitted when seen from above. The marks are temporary records of a much longer process: females arrive, dig, deposit eggs and return to the sea, leaving the land to hold the next stage of the cycle.
The newer global designation is therefore meaningful, but it is also limited in what it can describe. Calling the species least concern signals a major improvement from the endangered category it replaced. It does not mean every nesting beach is identical, that every period of the year will show the same numbers, or that recovery has reached a final and irreversible stage. Aldabra’s year-round activity and seasonal variation make that distinction visible without diminishing the importance of the wider comeback.
What comes next is less a single milestone than continued attention to the places that support nesting. The key questions include whether beaches such as Aldabra’s remain available for females, whether the patterns recorded there continue over time and how local conditions compare with the encouraging global assessment. The atoll’s turtle tracks offer an immediate sign of return, but they also point to a more cautious conclusion: conservation gains are strongest when the broad picture and the conditions on individual shores are considered together.
