Is This Giant Celestial Body a Moon, a Planet or Something in Between? The Strange Object Calls Astronomical Labels Into Question

A newly identified object in a nearby stellar system is challenging the usual categories used to describe worlds beyond the solar system. Its estimated mass is close to Jupiter’s, yet it travels around a brown dwarf rather than directly around a star. That brown dwarf, in turn, is itself in orbit around a small star. For the moment, the researchers have used the term exosatellite for the outer companion, a label that reflects both its unusual setting and the uncertainty over whether familiar names such as planet or moon are adequate.

Its arrangement produces a nested orbital structure: a small star at the center of the wider system, a brown dwarf moving around that star, and the Jupiter-mass object accompanying the brown dwarf.
