One of the World’s Largest Chinstrap Penguin Colonies Is Shrinking Fast

A major chinstrap penguin stronghold in the South Atlantic has suffered a steep decline, researchers report. On Zavodovski Island, an isolated volcanic outpost lying between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica, the population fell by 63 percent from 2011 to 2025. The result places renewed attention on a colony once counted among the largest for the species anywhere in the world. It also makes the island an important measure of environmental change in waters near Antarctica.
The findings appeared October 7 in the journal Current Biology. Researchers estimate that the drop represents roughly 500,000 breeding birds. That scale matters beyond the island itself: a loss of this size changes the picture of how a species associated with some of the planet’s most remote waters is faring in a rapidly changing marine environment. The assessment is notable because it compares the colony across more than a decade, rather than describing a single breeding season.

Zavodovski has no permanent human population, but its remoteness has not insulated its wildlife from conditions beyond its shores. The island sits in a region shaped by the Southern Ocean, where food availability and ocean conditions are closely tied to the fortunes of seabirds. Its volcanic setting and distance from populated places make the reported contraction particularly striking, because the apparent pressure is not described as a local disturbance on the island. Instead, the study points outward, toward changes affecting the marine setting on which the colony depends.
Chinstrap penguins depend heavily on Antarctic krill, small crustaceans that form a central link in the polar food web. The birds are considered dietary specialists because much of their feeding is built around that prey. When krill becomes less dependable, the effects can extend from individual foraging trips to the ability of adults to breed and raise chicks, making changes in prey supply especially consequential for colonies concentrated in one place. For a population this large, disruption in that food relationship can be felt on a substantial scale.
The study’s researchers connect the decline to climate change, arguing that it is interfering with the penguins’ food resources. Their conclusion does not mean every change in the colony can be assigned to a single event or season. Instead, it identifies a broader environmental disruption as the explanation for a long-term fall measured across 14 years. That framing places the result within an evolving ocean system, rather than treating it as an isolated event confined to the island.
That distinction is important when interpreting a population trend. Penguin numbers can vary from one breeding season to another, and a snapshot can miss those swings. A comparison spanning 2011 through 2025 offers a longer view, though it also raises the need for continued surveys to determine whether the decline persists, slows or reverses as ocean conditions evolve. Future monitoring will be needed to show how the population responds as its feeding environment changes.

The loss also illustrates why krill-focused species can serve as signals of wider strain in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic ecosystems. Krill supports more than penguins, and shifts in its distribution or abundance can reverberate through predators that rely on the same resource. The Zavodovski results therefore concern both the colony’s immediate future and the resilience of a broader marine food system. A declining colony may reveal pressures that are otherwise difficult to see across remote ocean waters.
There is still a limit to what a single island can establish about every chinstrap colony. The new assessment documents a severe change at Zavodovski, rather than proving that all populations are declining at an identical pace. Local conditions, prey access and breeding circumstances may differ across the species’ range, so comparisons with other colonies will remain necessary. The finding is consequently a serious warning from one site, not a complete census of the species worldwide.
For now, the study gives scientists a clear benchmark: one exceptionally large breeding population has lost nearly two-thirds of its members in little more than a decade. Future counts, alongside observations of krill and ocean conditions, will help show whether food-web disruption is continuing to reshape the colony. The warning from an uninhabited island is that even distant wildlife populations are connected to climate-driven changes across the sea.
