SpaceX halted the second launch attempt of its upgraded Starship rocket on Thursday, cutting off the countdown within seconds of the booster igniting at its Starbase facility in South Texas. The company had not disclosed a specific cause for the shutdown as of the abort itself, though an explanation soon followed from its chief executive.

Elon Musk wrote on the social platform X that a subset of engines failed to fire properly, which triggered the vehicle's automated safety system to halt the countdown before liftoff. He added that engineers plan to swap out two of the malfunctioning engines and that another launch attempt is unlikely before the following week.

The scrubbed flight was meant to carry SpaceX's newest generation of Starlink internet satellites, the third iteration of the constellation's hardware, marking what would have been their debut trip to space. Because Starship has yet to prove it can actually reach a stable orbit around Earth, the satellites on board were engineered to disintegrate in the atmosphere roughly 20 minutes after being released rather than remain in space.

News of the aborted countdown rattled investors briefly, with SpaceX shares sliding more than 4% during after-hours trading before recovering a portion of that drop. The swift, if partial, rebound suggests markets still view the setback as a routine hiccup in an experimental flight program rather than a sign of deeper trouble.

Starship V3 represents a substantially reworked version of SpaceX's massive rocket system, which the company has been iterating on for years as it works toward a vehicle capable of ferrying large payloads — and eventually astronauts — well beyond low Earth orbit. Launch aborts triggered moments before or during engine ignition are not unusual for the program; SpaceX has repeatedly emphasized that its iterative, failure-tolerant testing approach is central to how it refines the rocket's design.

Still, back-to-back scrubs on consecutive attempts underscore how much engineering work remains before Starship can reliably deliver payloads to orbit, a milestone the company has yet to achieve despite years of test flights. Each delay also pushes back SpaceX's broader roadmap, which depends on Starship not only for satellite deployment but for NASA's Artemis lunar missions and the company's long-term ambitions of sending crews to Mars.

For now, SpaceX has offered no timeline beyond Musk's indication that the next attempt won't come until sometime next week, giving technicians time to replace the faulty engines and review flight data. The company has not said whether the same batch of third-generation Starlink satellites will fly on the rescheduled attempt or whether additional inspections could push the date further out.
