Starlink’s V5 dish is now available — here’s how it compares

SpaceX has begun rolling out the fifth generation of its Starlink satellite dish, making the redesigned hardware available to new and existing subscribers as a successor to the fourth-generation unit that has served as the company's standard home terminal. The launch invites an obvious question for a large slice of the Starlink customer base: what happens to the compact Mini terminal, which has not received a matching update alongside this release.
Starlink, the satellite broadband arm of SpaceX, delivers internet access through a constellation of low-orbit satellites paired with a ground terminal, commonly called the dish, that customers set up at home, in a vehicle, or on a boat. Because the service depends on that physical hardware to talk to satellites overhead, the design of the dish itself has a direct bearing on setup ease, weather resistance, and the speeds a household can expect, which is why SpaceX periodically retools the equipment rather than leaving it unchanged for years at a time.
Hardware refreshes like this one typically aim at a mix of goals: trimming manufacturing costs as production scales, improving durability in harsh outdoor conditions, and squeezing out incremental gains in throughput or reliability. Coverage comparing the new model against its predecessor tends to focus on exactly those trade-offs, build quality, physical footprint, and day-to-day performance, giving prospective buyers a sense of whether the newer unit is worth choosing over the older one that has been widely deployed in recent years.
The timing matters beyond individual households. Starlink has become a significant option for customers in rural and remote areas that lack reliable fiber or cable service, as well as for mobile use cases such as recreational vehicles, maritime vessels, and emergency response. Any change to the core terminal ripples through those markets, since installers, resellers, and enterprise customers all factor dish specifications into deployment decisions. The update also lands as SpaceX faces growing competition from rival low-orbit satellite internet ventures, giving the company added incentive to keep refreshing its consumer hardware.
Not every current subscriber needs to act on the news, however. Historically, SpaceX has allowed existing customers to keep using their older dishes rather than forcing an upgrade, with new hardware versions offered mainly to new sign-ups or as an optional paid swap for people already on the service. Availability of a freshly introduced terminal can also vary by region in the early stages of a rollout, so not every market is guaranteed immediate access to the latest version at launch.
The more pointed caveat raised alongside this release is the absence of an equivalent update for the Starlink Mini, the smaller, more portable terminal SpaceX introduced for travelers and users who prioritize size and weight over raw performance. Its omission from the current refresh has left owners and prospective buyers of the compact model uncertain about whether, and when, similar improvements will reach that product line, rather than being limited to the standard-sized dish.
For now, the fifth-generation dish stands as the more fully documented option, with the Mini's future update path left an open question. Customers weighing a purchase are likely to keep watching for further word from SpaceX on whether the smaller terminal will eventually see its own hardware refresh, and on how pricing and regional availability for the new standard dish settle in the weeks ahead.
