The hits keep coming in Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s first trailer

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is finally here, and it looks like Marvel and Sony are about to put Peter Parker through a different kind of existential crisis.

Though nobody in Brand New Day’s trailer knows who Peter (Tom Holland) is or that he’s the one saving people as Spider-Man, he still has vivid memories from the past when he was still close with MJ Watson (Zendaya) and Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon). Peter seems to have made peace with his “new” life as a secret crimefighter butting heads with villains and other New York vigilante fixtures like the Punisher (Jon Bernthal). But with all memory of him erased, life is lonely for Peter and it looks like his feelings are impacting his powers.

While the trailer doesn’t exactly reveal what kind of enemies Brand New Day will introduce, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) suggests that Peter’s DNA may be mutating in unexpected ways. Shots of Pete waking up in cocoon webs and screaming in pain as his spider-sense goes into overdrive make it look like the movie might pull from Marvel’s comics storylines focused on him going through strange transformations. But the trailer’s explicit mention of mutation (and the way it doesn’t at all feature Sadie Sink’s currently unnamed character) could be a sign that Brand New Day will somehow involve Marvel’s X-Men characters when it hits theaters on July 31st.
