What is an aortic dissection?

The aorta is the body's largest blood vessel, carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart out to the rest of the body. An aortic dissection occurs when the inner lining of that vessel tears, allowing blood to force its way between the layers of the artery wall. Rather than flowing smoothly through the vessel's center, blood gets pushed into a false channel, which can weaken the wall further, restrict blood flow to organs, or cause the aorta to rupture entirely.
Patients often describe the onset as abrupt and severe, typically a tearing or ripping pain in the chest or upper back that arrives without warning. Because those symptoms can resemble a heart attack or other conditions, the dissection is sometimes missed in its earliest hours, a delay that can prove costly given how rapidly the condition can worsen.
Certain factors raise a person's odds of developing the condition, including chronically high blood pressure, inherited connective-tissue disorders, prior aortic aneurysms, and, to a lesser degree, older age and a family history of aortic disease. Persistent hypertension is considered one of the most significant contributors, since sustained pressure on artery walls over time can make them more prone to tearing.
Timely diagnosis generally relies on imaging such as CT scans or echocardiograms, which allow doctors to see the tear and determine how far it extends along the aorta. Depending on the dissection's location, treatment can range from aggressive blood-pressure management to emergency open-heart surgery to repair or replace the damaged section of the vessel. Outcomes vary widely and hinge heavily on how quickly the problem is identified and treated.
Public health experts note that aortic dissection remains relatively uncommon compared with other cardiovascular emergencies, but it carries an outsized risk of death, particularly in the first hours after symptoms begin. That combination of rarity and severity is part of why cardiologists like Patel use moments of public attention, such as high-profile cases in the news, to raise broader awareness of warning signs and encourage people with risk factors to keep blood pressure under control.
Officials have so far described the finding tied to Graham's death as preliminary, and cardiologists caution that a fuller understanding of any individual case typically requires additional medical review before a cause is confirmed. Even so, physicians say the renewed spotlight offers a useful opening to remind the public that sudden, severe chest or back pain should never be dismissed and warrants immediate emergency evaluation.
